Albay Şerif YAÇAĞAZ 1876 yılında Tatarpazarı’nda doğdu. Harp Okulundan 1898 yılında teğmen rütbesiyle mezun oldu. 29 Aralık 1903’te üsteğmenliğe, 12 Mayıs 1910’da yüzbaşılığa terfi etti. 1910 yılına kadar ordunun çeşitli kademelerinde görev aldı. 12 Mayıs 1910’da 6’ncı Nişancı Taburu 3’üncü Bölük komutanı oldu. (Bu Tabur, 23 Şubat 1911’de 19’uncu Tümen 191’inci Nişancı Taburu adını almıştır.) Balkan Savaşı’na bu görevle katıldı. Daha sonra 7 Aralık 1913’te 124’üncü Alay 2’nci Tabur 2’nci Bölük komutanı olarak atandı. 1 Mart 1914’te binbaşılığa terfi etti ve aynı tarihte 124’üncü Alay 3’üncü Tabur komutanı oldu. Bu görevindeyken Birinci Dünya Savaşı’na girildi. 27 Eylül 1915’te 53’üncü Tümen 161’inci Alay Komutanlığına getirildi. 22 Ekim 1916’da yarbaylığa yükselen YAÇAĞAZ, 14 Ekim 1917’de İstanbul Merkez komutan muavini, 24 Aralık 1919’da Personel Başkanlığı Merkez Dairesi Tahkik Heyeti başkanı olarak tayin edildi. 1920 yılında kaçarak Ankara’ya geldi ve Millî Mücadele’ye katıldı. Yozgat Mevki komutanı ve mutasarrıfı olarak görev yaptı. 16 Aralık 1920’de mutasarrıflıktan istifa etti. 31 Ocak 1921’de 41’inci Tümen komutanı olarak tayin edildi. 1 Mart 1921’de albay olan YAÇAĞAZ, 41’inci Tümen komutanı olarak Sakarya Meydan Muharebesi’ne katıldı. 27 Ağustos 1922’de El-cezire Cephesi’nde Siirt’teki 2’nci Tümen komutanı, 13 Ocak 1923’te İstanbul Merkez komutanı olarak atandı. Bu görevinde iken 17 Temmuz 1923’te emekli oldu. Osmanlı Devleti ve Avusturya-Macaristan İmparatorluğu tarafından verilen çeşitli nişan ve madalyaları olan Albay Şerif YAÇAĞAZ, 5 Ekim 1938’de vefat etmiştir.
Colonel Şerif YAÇAĞAZ was born in Tatarpazarı in 1876. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1898 with the rank of lieutenant. He was promoted to first lieutenant on December 29, 1903, and to captain on May 12, 1910. He served in various echelons in the army until 1910. On May 12, 1910, he became the commander of the 3rd Company of the 6th Marksman Battalion. (This Battalion was renamed as the 191st Marksman Battalion of the 19th Division on February 23, 1911.) He participated in the Balkan War on this duty. Later, on December 7, 1913, he was appointed as the commander of the 2nd Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 124th Regiment. He was promoted to major on March 1, 1914, and he became the commander of the 3rd Battalion of the 124th Regiment on the same date. While he was on this duty, the First World War was entered. On September 27, 1915, he was appointed as the Commander of the 161st Regiment of the 53rd Division. YAÇAĞAZ, who was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 22, 1916, was appointed as the Deputy Provost Marshall of İstanbul on October 14, 1917, and as the head of the Investigation Committee of the Adjutant General’s Office of the Department of Personnel on December 24, 1919. He escaped to Ankara in 1920 and participated in the War of Independence. He served as Yozgat Position commander and mutasarrif (governor of an Ottoman province). He resigned from his duty as mutasarrif on December 16, 1920. He was appointed as the commander of the 41st Division on January 31, 1921. YAÇAĞAZ, who became a colonel on March 1, 1921, participated in the Battle of Sakarya as the commander of the 41st Division. He was appointed as the commander of the 2nd Division in Siirt on the Al-Jazeera Front on August 27, 1922, and as the Provost marshall of İstanbul on January 13, 1923. While he was on this duty, he retired on July 17, 1923. Colonel Şerif YAÇAĞAZ, who had various decorations and medals given by the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, passed away on October 5, 1938.
