Tümgeneral Osman Nuri KOPTAGEL 1874 yılında Erzincan’da doğdu. Harp Okulundan 1895 yılında teğmen rütbesiyle mezun oldu. 23 Şubat 1898’de üsteğmenliğe, 31 Ocak 1903’te yüzbaşılığa, 31 Temmuz 1908’de kıdemli yüzbaşılığa terfi etti. 1912 yılına kadar ordunun çeşitli kademelerinde görev aldı. Balkan Savaşı’nda Şark Ordusunda görev aldı. 21 Ekim 1912’de binbaşı oldu. 6 Şubat 1915’te İstanbul’a geldi. 14 Eylül 1915’te yarbaylığa terfi etti. Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nda Kafkas Cephesi’nde Çapakçur Müfreze komutanı, 14 Ekim 1916’da Kafkas Cephesi’nde 7’nci Tümen komutanı, 30 Haziran 1917’de 43’üncü Tümen komutanı, 12 Ekim 1917’de 27’nci Tümen komutanı, 18 Haziran 1918’de 43’üncü Tümen komutanı, daha sonra Amman Mevki komutanı olarak görev yaptı. 18 Ekim 1919’da 12’nci Tümen komutanı olarak görev yaparken 6 Aralık 1920’de albay oldu. 1921’de Batı Cephesi’nde görevlendirildi. 31 Ağustos 1922’de tümgeneral olan KOPTAGEL, 1923’te 12’nci Tümen komutanı, 30 Ocak 1927’de Generaller Askerî Mahkemesi üyesi, 11 Ağustos 1930’da 17’nci Tümen komutanı ve Diyarbakır Askerî Bölge komutanı, 1930’da tekrar Generaller Askerî Mahkemesi üyesi, 1931’de 7’nci Tümen komutanı olarak tayin edildi. 8 Ocak 1932’de Askerî Yargıtay üyeliğine atandı. 8 Mayıs 1934’te emekliye ayrıldı. Sivil yaşamında V ve VI. Dönem Malatya milletvekili olarak görev yaptı. Osmanlı Devleti ve Alman İmparatorluğu tarafından verilen çeşitli nişan ve madalyalar ile TBMM tarafından verilen İstiklal Madalyası sahibi olan Tümgeneral Osman Nuri KOPTAGEL, 22 Kasım 1942’de vefat etmiştir.

Major General Osman Nuri KOPTAGEL was born in Erzincan in 1874. He graduated from the Military Academy as a lieutenant in 1895. He was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant on February 23, 1898; captain on January 31, 1903; lieutenant commander on July 31, 1908. He served in varied positions in the army until 1912. He served in Eastern Army during the Balkan War. He became major on October 21, 1912. He went to Istanbul on February 6, 1915 and was promoted the rank of lieutenant colonel on September 14, 1915. During the First World War, he served as the commander of Çapakçur Detachment in Caucasus Campaign; the commander of the 7th Division in Caucasus Campaign on October 14, 1916; the commander of the 43rd Division on June 30, 1917; the commander of the 27th Division on October 12, 1917; the commander of the 43rd Division on June 18, 1918; later the commander of Amman Position. He was appointed as the commander of the 12th Division on October 18, 1919 and became colonel while on this duty on December 6, 1920. He was assigned to Western Front in 1921. KOPTAGEL promoted to major general on August 31, 1922 was appointed as the commander of the 12th Division in 1923; the member of Martial Court of Generals on January 30, 1927; the commander of the 17th Division and the commander of Diyarbakır Military Zone on August 11, 1930; again the member of Martial Court of Generals in 1930; the commander of the 7th Division in 1931. He was appointed as a member of Military Court of Appeals on January 8, 1932. He retired on May 8, 1934. He served as a deputy for Malatya for 5th and 6th terms in his civilian life. Major General Osman Nuri KOPTAGEL who had various decorations and medals decorated by the Ottoman Empire and German Empire as well as the Independence Medal decorated by Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA), passed away on November 22, 1942.
