5’İNCİ CUMHURBAŞKANIMIZ CEVDET SUNAY 1899 yılında Erzurum’da doğdu. Kuleli Askerî Lisesinde öğrenci iken 7 Temmuz 1917 tarihinde orduya katıldı. 73’üncü Topçu Taburu Bataryasında subay adayı olarak görev yaptığı sırada 1917 yılında İngilizlere esir düştü, 1919 yılına kadar Mısır’da esarette kaldı. Esaret dönüşü, 2’nci Kolordu topçu yaveri olarak görev yaparken 1 Ocak 1921’de Anadolu’ya geçerek Millî Mücadele’ye katıldı. Çeşitli birliklerde batarya takım komutanlığı ve batarya komutanlığı yaptıktan sonra yüzbaşı rütbesi ile 1 Kasım 1925-7 Ağustos 1926 tarihleri arasında Harp Okulunda, 11 Ağustos 1926-31 Ocak 1927 tarihleri arasında ise Topçu Okulunda tahsilini tamamladı. 1930 yılında Harp Akademisini kurmay subay olarak bitirdikten sonra 27’nci Topçu Alayında Batarya Komutanlığı, Genelkurmay Karargâhında Karargâh Subaylığı, 30’uncu Topçu Alayında Batarya Komutanlığı, 4’üncü Kolorduda Şube Müdürlüğü, 1’inci Süvari Tümeninde Şube Müdürlüğü ile Kurmay Başkanlığı, 5’inci Tümen Topçu Alayında Tabur Komutanlığı, Harp Akademilerinde öğretim üyeliği, 72’nci Topçu Alay Komutanlığı, 41’inci Topçu Alay Komutanlığı, 204’üncü Motorlu Topçu Alay Komutanlığı ve 3’üncü Zırhlı Tümen 6’ncı Tank Alay Komutanlığı görevlerini yürüttü. 1949 yılında tuğgeneralliğe terfi etti. Tuğgeneral rütbesi ile 3’üncü Zırhlı Tugay Komutanlığı ve Genelkurmay Harekât Daire Başkanlığı yaptı. 1952 yılında tümgeneralliğe yükseldi. Tümgeneral rütbesi ile Genelkurmay Harekât Daire Başkanlığı ve 33’üncü Tümen Komutanlığı görevlerinde bulundu. 1955 yılında korgeneral oldu. Korgeneral rütbesi ile 9’uncu Kolordu Komutanlığı, Genelkurmay Harekât Başkanlığı ve Genelkurmay II. Başkanlığı görevlerinde bulunduktan sonra 1958 yılında orgeneralliğe terfi etti. Orgeneral rütbesinde Genelkurmay II. Başkanlığı, Kara Kuvvetleri Komutanlığı görevlerini yürüttü. 2 Ağustos 1960 tarihinde atandığı Genelkurmay Başkanlığı görevinden 15 Mart 1966 tarihinde kendi isteği ile emekli oldu. 1966-1973 yılları arasında Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin 5’inci Cumhurbaşkanı olarak görev yaptı. Harp Madalyası ve İstiklal Madalyası sahibi olan Orgeneral Cevdet SUNAY, 22 Mayıs 1982’de İstanbul’da vefat etmiştir.

The fifth President of the Republic of Türkiye, CEVDET SUNAY, was born in Erzurum in 1899. While he was a student at Kuleli Military High School, he joined the army on July 7, 1917. While serving as an officer cadet in the 73rd Artillery Battalion Battery, he was captured by the British in 1917 and remained in captivity in Egypt until 1919. Upon his return from captivity, while serving as an artillery aide-de-camp in the 2nd Corps, he crossed into Anatolia on January 1, 1921 and joined the Turkish War of National Sovereignty. After serving as a battery platoon commander and battery commander in various units, he completed his education at the Military Academy between 1 November 1925 and 7 August 1926 and at the Artillery School between 11 August 1926 and 31 January 1927 with the rank of captain. After graduating from the Military Academy as a staff officer in 1930, he served as Battery Commander in the 27th Artillery Regiment, Headquarters Officer in the General Staff Headquarters, Battery Commander in the 30th Artillery Regiment, Branch Manager in the 4th Corps, Branch Manager and Chief of Staff in the 1st Cavalry Division, Battalion Commander in the 5th Division Artillery Regiment, lecturer at the War Academies, Commander of the 72nd Artillery Regiment, Commander of the 41st Artillery Regiment, Commander of the 204th Motorized Artillery Regiment and 3rd Armored. He served as the Commander of the 6th Tank Regiment of the Division. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1949. With the rank of Brigadier General, he served as the Commander of the 3rd Armored Brigade and the Head of the General Staff Operations Department. He was promoted to major general in 1952. With the rank of Major General, he served as the Head of the General Staff Operations Department and the Commander of the 33rd Division. He became a lieutenant general in 1955. After serving as Commander of the 9th Corps, Chief of Operations of the General Staff and Chief of the General Staff with the rank of Lieutenant General, he was promoted to general in 1958. He served as the Second Chief of the General Staff and the Commander of the Land Forces in the rank of General. He was appointed as Chief of General Staff on 2 August 1960 and retired on 15 March 1966 at his own request. Between 1966 and 1973, he served as the Fifth President of the Republic of Turkey. General Cevdet SUNAY, recipient of the War Medal and the Medal of Independence, passed away on May 22, 1982, in Istanbul.
